The Success of Trend Homebuilding Project

Gawad Kalinga Volunteers

Happy Trenders are also home-builders!

Thanks to everyone who joined this batch. Special thanks goes to Ica and my TL who had given me the chance to be part of this homebuilding project. I just had another best week of my life with this pack of happy Trenders and lovely children.

Because I just got back to work and there are other important things to attend to right now, I’m parking all of my thoughts and GK experiences aside. I’m glad that my headache and back pain did not cripple me from building homes but fueled me to work harder instead. With the inspiring children around me and kind-hearted volunteers to help me, I really felt I have all the powers in the world which made me a super hero! Well, we’ve been GK heroes during this homebuilding trip!

I’m a Gawad Kalinga advocate and I’m proud of it!

Gawad Kalinga (GK) translated in English means to “to give care”. GK’s vision for the Philippines is a slum-free, squatter-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for every Filipino.

Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO): How Charitable Are You?

The CHILD Haus (Center for Health Improvement and Life Development) is a temporary shelter that provides free room and board to indigent patients from the provinces who have no place to stay in Manila while undergoing medical treatment. The house mostly admits children with cancer.

It is located inside the QI/PCSO compound in E. Rodriguez Ave in Quezon City. But with the PCSO’s transfer to their new offices in Roxas Boulevard, the shelter now finds itself in danger of being kicked out.

I had a glimpse of Umagang Kay Ganda earlier and Anthony Taberna’s Punto Por Punto caught my attention. The heated discussion is about (Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office) PCSO’s relocation from the Quezon Institute owned by the Philippine Tuberculosis Society Inc. in Quezon City to Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City. Among the highlights of the issue are the true reasons behind the office movement and their plans for the sick orphans. The temporary shelter in the PCSO compound is currently housing around 70 children with cancer and other illnesses together with their families.

For the record, the CHILD Haus was founded by the Ricky Reyes Foundation, supported by presidential daughter Evangeline “Luli” Arroy, PCSO themselves and other advocates. Now that the office has been relocated, will there be a special place for these kids, too?

According to PCSO Chairman Margarita Juico, they have accepted the offer of Mayor Herbert Bautista to locate their clinic at the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority compound behind the Quezon City Hall. They had also coordinated with Mayor Lim to rehabilitate an old building at the Ospital ng Maynila and turn it into PCSO clinic. Despite this careful consideration, former PCSO chairman Manuel Morato and the ever proactive people of the Philippines criticize the idea of moving to a new office. PNoy administration is also being questioned. Should it really be that way?

Well, it’s politics so what do you expect? Can these elected officials do something about this current issue! Anyway, I won’t bother posting about this topic if Kythe Foundation wasn’t mentioned. Since I have an ongoing campaign for this organization, I am happy to know that Kythe Child Life Program can make a difference. Yes, the if-ever abandoned kids can get support from Kythe.

Kids Ought To Be Smarter!

We just had another meeting with the new officers (yours truly is the new Business Manager) of CSS Outreach Committee and after reviewing our plans and action items, I just realized that I haven’t posted my thoughts and experiences about the conducted ISKF (Internet Safety for Kids and Families) seminar in FEU-FERN last September 17.

We’ll be conducting another one this November so before that event takes place, let me share what happened the last time. I won’t be exerting much effort today since this is long overdue. I just grabbed what I have written for our e-magazine. It has been published anyway so this won’t be a total spoiler. You can either click the attached image here or read the original article I’ve written below:

How can you make the kids smart surfers? Of course educating them can do the trick but there’s a better way on how you can make learning more effective – group discussions. That’s what the CSS Outreach Committee did when they visited FEU-FERN and conducted the Internet Safety for Kids and Families seminar.

Being with the vibrant kids made us feel younger and witnessing their enthusiasm helped us go further in teaching them how to stay safe online.

Michelle Lao, inspired by heart-warming introduction of one of the Barangayette Officers, started her opening remarks excitedly by asking how many of the kids have Facebook accounts and everyone raised their hands! These students were composed of the Grade IV- Grade VI classes, a total of 140 head count. For better understanding, she used a simple analogy to explain Trend Micro’s role in ensuring safety in the exchange of digital information. She compared it to the teachers who ensure student’s safety within school premises. This served as good head start for the kids as they moved on to the first lecture – general online safety.

Edrian Montealegre of Trend Micro CSS Premium Service discussed the many uses of internet along with the threats that go with it. He highlighted how social media can be exploited by hackers and other malware. The kids were taught how to be a smart surfer by respecting others, staying secure and trusting no one. It was made clear to them that they are what they post online.

The kids were lively all through out the discussion especially that there are random prizes to attentive participants such as Trend Micro Internet Security, ball pens, cellphone holders and of course, chocolates!

Mark Stephen Eustaquio, another Technical Support Engineer who provides premium service to Trend Micro clients enlightened the kids about cyber bullying. It’s so nice to know that the kids can relate to the kinds of cyberbullies namely vengeful Angel, show off bullies, mean girls and inadvertent cyberbully. He also shared videos of true-to-life bullying and online bullying. It helped the children clearly recognize the difference between real-life friends and online friends. We’ve seen few finger-pointing scenes all through out the discussion, it’s either they’re pointing someone who’s a bully or someone who has been bullied. What’s important is we have increased the children’s awareness about reality and how to act accordingly. When the speaker asked if it’s CLARO, the kids enthusiastically answered him in unison: RECTO!

Interactive Q and A portion followed after these two presentations. Michelle Lao shared her insights when one of the students asked if there are good viruses. She mentioned love virus as one of them, which is created with good intention and became annoying later on.

And just like any other famous kid’s show, it won’t be complete without games! Helen Vicente led the balloon games. The participants were divided into four groups according to balloon colors – green, white, yellow and red. The kids actively tapped their balloons and did their best to avoid them from touching the floor. Yellow Team won this game and each participant get a Trend Micro notebook! Mary Anne Beloy and the Barangayette Officers helped the Outreach Committee in facilitating this event.

Aside from the upcoming Internet Safety for Kids and Families seminar either in JIL-Bulacan or PUP, I’ll be part of the Gawad Kalinga Home Building Project in Batangas, too! Yay, I’m so excited!

Pledge for Healthier Children Now!

Pledge for Healthier Children

Health is wealth! :)

This banner says it all!

I love kids and I want to see more of them each day – happily playing because of healthy living. I’m not a parent yet and my youngest sister is already in Grade 5 (Yeah, sorry. I forgot her age and I’m too lazy to compute. All I know is her birthday and grade.) but it does not hinder me from joining this campaign. I have already posted my pledge about introducing healthy foods to children such as vegetables and fresh milk. As a matter of fact, I’m interested to feeding program and would love to join if there’s any.

Let’s build a healthy and wealthy nation through this precious children and us, concerned citizens. Help me spread the word! Visit Palamantasan and drop by the Pledge Tree for your pledges!
